Outcrossing and the Mating Competitiveness of Male Mediterranean Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): Results from the World’s Oldest Mass-Reared Strain

چکیده

The Hawaiian HI-LAB strain is the oldest mass-reared strain of Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), in the world, and recent laboratory and field data show that HI-LAB males perform poorly in mating competition against wild males. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mating performance of HILAB males could be improved by a single outcrossing event with wild flies (HI-LAB females X wild males). Using field-caged host trees, I monitored male mating success with wild females and found that (1) HI-LAB males had low mating success relative to wild males, (2) F 1 hybrid males mated with equal frequency as wild males, and (3) F 10 hybrid males had a reduced mating success similar to that recorded for the HI-LAB males. The implications of the present findings for mass-rearing strategies are discussed.

Exposure to ginger root oil enhances mating success of irradiated, mass-reared males of Mediterranean fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Previous research revealed that exposure to ginger root oil, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, containing the known male attractant (a-copaene) increased the mating success of male Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), from a newly established laboratory colony. The goal of the current study was to determine whether exposure to ginger root oil likewise enhanced the mating competi...

Exposure to Ginger Root Oil Decreases Capture of Male Mediterranean Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Trimedlure-Baited Traps

Detection programs for pestiferous tephritid fruit flies rely on traps baited with either natural or synthetic food substances, or so-called male lures. While studies on several tephritid species have demonstrated that protein feeding reduces subsequent attraction to protein food baits, comparable data for male lures are scant and largely restricted to the genus Bactrocera. Ginger root oil (GRO...

Age-dependent variation in mating success of sterile male Mediterranean fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): implications for sterile insect technique.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is widely used in integrated programs against the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Unfortunately, the mass-rearing procedures inherent to the SIT often lead to a reduction in the mating ability of the released males. To counter this deficiency, SIT programs rely upon the production and release of large numbers of ...

Male Courtship Behavior of the South American Fruit Fly, Anastrepha fraterculus, from an Argentinean Laboratory Strain

The South American fruit fly Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a pest of fruit species of warm regions of the Americas, including Argentina. Some authors claim that this taxon includes a group of cryptic species. In order to evaluate possible targets of sexual selection, it is necessary to analyze ethological aspects of male courtship and identify particular steps tha...
